Movie intention

I have changed my original design intentions for the film through adding rotating elements within each component to gain intrest within the design aswell as changing the view of the camera as my original intention to follow a sriral path around the tower upwards with each slowly fading in did not work as successfully with the camera and following path as I wanted. therefore I have looked at viewing my design from the center and at varius angled views of the surrounding elements with a single camera flow. I still have kept the final scene of going downward through the center and fading to black.

Design Intentions

Currently I have changed from my original design intentions and changed the form of my model so it currently rotates in a circle but spirals upwards with a new element being added each 0.25 of a second.

100 Words

In my final renders I liked the idea of refraction and reflection and opacity to see through multiple layers  and so will revisit deep exploration and look at gloss and refraction indexes. I like the idea of white and blue for colouring as they compliment each other. My design intentions for the movement of the model is to have each layer moving as a seperate group and also having componenets within the group moving at various speeds and rhythms around the central point.

Lighting + Materials 300DPI 448KB

First I explored with a range of materials included gloss, matte, metals, glass and textures. Through this I decided that I liked the idea of the blue in the model being solid and the rest of the model being a transparency to allow the entire model and the depth to be fully explored. I then looked at lighting and found effective lighting to show my model in the best way.  After this I then looked at the various glass materials and established the transparacy which worked. The final lighting and glass and transparency that I went with is the 4th selection. I chose this one due to the balance between light and dark where a contrast still exists although not a harsh one.

Testing Scenes in Deep Exploration. 300DPI, 430KB

After exploring my model I looked at a range of scenes and decided that I would like to have views of both the exterior and the interior elements of my model to gain a range of various views to effectively portray an environment. After consideration I choose my final 3 views of the model to the screens 5 for a exterior view and 2 and 8 to really get inside the model and fully explore it.

Sketch up models - Exploration of ideas.

Next I took some of my ideas into sketch up to explore ways which the idea of circular shapes and rotation could be executed.
This first design was a plain tower where each layer consisted of on component spiralling upwards. In this idea I like the idea of layering although found the circles to be plain and un interesting. 78KB 300DPI

In this next Idea I looked at a similar idea although in a smaller scale and more spread out. I found this to be more successful. I also liked the contrast in full, and cut aways into the design and also how the sizes varied in depth vertically to provide a more spread out component. I Like how from the top view no levels or layering is developed until the camera angle is tilted. 49KB, 300DPI

This next idea I liked at a layering and various lengths of each component, I disliked the simpliciity and how the circles did not vary in size.
115KB 300DPI

This final design lost the idea of a singular object and looked more into the idea of a scene. I like this idea due to the mass which means a range of views are able to be used to portray very diffrent scenes. Although all structure is lost.
119KB 300DPI

After looking at these three concepts I want to look into ways to manipulate concept two and four in an effective way to create a scene that will also look good and be able to be animated effectivly.

First Sketches

As I didnt have a singular favourite final I took three of my finals and explored various movements and ideas in which I could develop these.
Here I looked at ways which my repition concept could be developed and my personal favourite idea was the falling blocks twisting and being manipulated as they fell.
300DPI, 36KB

The second design I looked at I came across a lot of idea in terms of movement and decided that this would be the most promising design to continue with. I liked the idea of having various levels and a mixture of depths/thickness's which could spiral to form a single unit or work to create a large mass of circles.

The final and least successful image which I looked at developing was Datium as i found that this image was restricting as the shapes used were simple and plain. Although the idea which I do like from this is the view and how the mass is at one point with a few singular objects seperate creating depth and direction.

Datium - Re looked at. 343KB 300DPI

I disliked the crowded and spikiness of my first idea for Datum and so re looked at more effective shapes as I liked the idea of one or two coloured images with black and white images in the background. My favourite design out of these is the bottom right as it still portrays datum but consists of three planes which flow in an continuous movement opposed to the theme of the other design where 8/16 of the original components are repeated around a single point in a particular basic order.

Screen Shot - Symmetry 545KB, 300DPI

Of these three images I prefer the top image as if shows the depth of this design and disappears to a singular point. I also like the idea of the white transparency with the black background because of the contrast compared to the transparency on the white background.

Screen Shot - Proportion 192KB 300DPI

I dislike the xray view as the composition has too many lines in it making this style less effective. Of the views I most prefer the middle image although think this could be improved.

Screen shot - Repitition 490KB 30DPI

In this image I dislike the lowest image as the combination of the fog and xray style lose the shape of the image and make it hazy and hard to identify. Of the two upper images I experimented with how colour would effect the design and found that I disliked the use of a bright colour. I liked the view of the top image looking down on the design, a close up could work well aswell.

Screen Shot -Figure ground 290KB, 300DPI

In these scree shots I like either of the lower two although could get further into the image. I the harsh sharp edges which are used in the lowest model although I also dislike the opacity used in the upper two models.

Screen Shot Contrast 321KB 300DPI

With this image I prefer the lower screen shot as it gets inside the image and had more interest. However I like the x-ray element of the above design. The contrast between white and blue also helps to enhance the theme of contrast within the composition. Look into various colours.

Screen shot - Heirachy 230KB 300DPI

With these screen shots I prefer the camera position of the third as you get submerged within the composition opposed to viewing it from a distance with negative space surrounding. I also like the layering effect that is created although a better angle could be found which does not have the negative space on the left side. I like the idea of the opacity being lowered on the boxes although also like the solid form, possibly a way to do both to provide emphasis on certain boxes.

Screen Shot - Datum 519KB 300DPI

Of these two images I prefer the lower image this is because the flow is better from a central point outwards getting smaller opposed to the thick bulky appearance the upper image gives. I find that both these images are very cluttered and the shape of the component could be simplified and made more interesting.

Symmetry 202KB, 300DPI ; 28KB 300DPI

Here I first looked at making a symmetrical pattern and repeating this although when I made it in solid works it was a boring and simple image with no interest. I then had a second look at the design and came up with a more effective way to portray Asymmetry through using cylinders opposed to spheres and extruding and cuting away at them.

My new patterns for the design principles of Contrast and Symmetry after I edited my original concept.

I disliked my symmetry pattern and so did a few 2D sketches until I came up with a concept I was happy with.
